First some testimonials about the book:
Below are a few excerpts about this book and are taken from a compilation of five writer’s comments, who meet regularly to brainstorm and discuss each other’s work. The testimonials range from widely read traditionally published Irish authors to seasoned writers who have not yet ventured into the world of getting their writing published.
“This is a book about what to do with your own book, when it has been written. It is a very helpful guide-line to those who have knowledge of the internet, word documents … and in particular it gives information to those seeking a way to put their book on the world market”
“This book by Maria O’Hare – encourages people to be more creative and to take more control over their own creative work after it has been produced. As a step by step guide it gives the writer the ability to become more confident about their choice, as to the presentation of their endeavours”
“It strikes me that this is the work of a conceptual artist. This means, that the author is capable of the initial concept for her written work and then the vision to complete the manuscript in a new modern way – the difference between the old way of publishing and the new way of doing so has an extraordinary gap – that gap in particular is time. What used to take months to hear from a publisher is now no longer necessary, as within hours or less this conceptual artist has shared her ability so that others may save time. .. Now with this book “How this Book was Made” the writer without a controlling publisher can reach the entire world at the press of a button. This is what Maria O’Hare as conceptual artist is offering – not just to writers, but to those who have to research these elements in order to keep updating them and making improvements wherever possible from a technical point of view”.
“I feel there is a gap in the market and this is the type of book that fills that gap. Anyone just ready to approach a publisher would now very seriously consider the alternative as this …could change the course of people’s publishing choice”.
Thank you for considering downloading this e-book – a book within a book, where the book itself explains as it goes along, how it was created. This will provide you with the tools in your writer’s tool-kit to publish as little or as much as you want.
This e-book version lets you see in real-time the effects, limitations and possibilities of how a written document (manuscript) translates to flowable digital form that can be viewed on almost any mobile/computer device these days. However, for ease of working and applying all that the e-book teaches so that you can apply the knowledge to your own book/s, there is also a free printable PDF version which is available on request from firstname.lastname@example.org which comes with this e-book.
By the time you have worked your way through this ‘How To’ manual, you will know everything about doing the proper, professional formatting for an e-book, even with embedded images, along with its cover, that can be uploaded just about anywhere in the world for your potential readers to find with ease.
You don’t need any specialist knowledge or high-tech software programs; just the know-how and basic tools you probably already have as a writer and/or interested in publishing at some level. If you are of the old school and are not fully familiar with creating your manuscript using computer document programs, this book will show you the ropes each step of the way.
Even if you do not have a manuscript, for instance, you could practice by getting hold of an existing piece of text, or compile those old forgotten poems or scraps of memoirs together, maybe even blow the cobwebs of that neglected novel you slaved over and never even sent it to a publisher.
This book is about having a go and being creative in the process. Just enjoy the journey, whatever way you decide to go after reading it.
All you need is a willingness to go on the adventure and a few basic computing tools and very minimal technical skill. If for instance, you already have access to, or can get access to MS Word for windows or its equivalent for a MAC, or can get access to it via your local community resource center/library, and/or download the Open Source version ‘Open Office – Writer’, for free, then this is the only software required to produce your e-book the pain-free way and there are equally accessible related software requiring minimal technical skill if you want to venture into creating your own cover as well.
But, you could opt for the free tools supplied by Amazon (Kindle) for cover design instead. (Which is much simpler, but it means you’re kind of stuck with Amazon – but that’s Ok too for some). However, Amazon cannot help you with the successful formatting of an e-book for publication (the main text layout), nor can other similar services offer this for free (but this book will, for about the price of a double expresso with just as much kick).
This book essentially provides the means to publish e-books and to keep publishing your work with full independence, if you choose to. The point of this book is that it is highly flexible and there are a number of options depending upon how much freedom you would like over your book/s. The tools are there: it is just a matter of how you would like to use them.
This book is also suitable for established writers who have already published traditionally, but would like to expand their publishing horizons and to explore the possibilities and creative potential (painlessly and without the price tag) and thinking of publishing in the e-book format; but perhaps don’t feel they have the necessary skills.
‘How this Book was Made: & How You Can Make Your Own’ should also be of great value for those who are doing a ‘one-off’ book project, perhaps for a charity or community cause, which means that the book can raise more funds as you do not have to pay hundreds to a commercial company to produce the book, leaving more money for the cause and it would also be a great project to work collectively on using the PDF work-book and the digital version as well.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
LAYER ONE – THE BLOCK GRAPHIC (SHAPE AND COLOR) THAT FORMS THE BACKGROUND OF MY OVERALL COVER IMAGE.
Basically, the surest way to create a successful e-book formatted in a word document is to get rid of any previous formatting within your manuscript, This section will show you how and tell you why this is very important. So don’t do anything just yet, until you have read this part. Alternatively, you might be typing directly into a word-processing blank document. In which case you can skip the nuking method and only format your manuscript as the very last thing that you do. You can learn how to format for an e-book by following this section and apply your new-found knowledge when you are ready.
Some call it the NUCLEAR method meaning to NUKE everything back to the text itself. This term and its meaning come from the style guide on Smashwords (the other major global platform for self-publishing e-books beyond Amazon KDP – Kindle Direct Publishing). Using this method means your MSS (manuscript) will have simple basic text – THE MANUSCRIPT striped down to its bare bones and here is the reason why:
Instead of spending loads of time making your manuscript look beautiful in ‘Word’ or its equivalent, or if it already looks beautiful, please be aware that your digital book will not reflect all your efforts, unless you follow the steps below.
This is because, a physical book or physical manuscript, being a fixed format where things do not move around (although there is such a thing as a fixed format digital book used for cookery, children’s and photographic books etc – anything with lots of rich graphics, this is not our focus here) do not translate to e-books as in this format, everything would begin floating around, resizing and generally act in strange ways when viewed on an e-reader device.
This is one of the main reasons why it is important to make a copy of your mss so that you can do something quite different with the copy to make it work as a successful flowable text e-book to be read on any device….
& some excerpts from:
This present section will take you through the formatting methods to create a virtual cover for your e-book by showing you how it was made and all that you learn by following the guide below, should give you all the tools to create your own front cover of a physical book as well. All you need to create it are tools you probably already have at your fingertips.
For instance, although this present book’s interior files were created using MS Office tools – MS Word, the creation of the cover used other programs from this same office suite: i.e., PowerPoint: the slide presentation software which, as you will see, does a great deal more than just slide shows.
Open Office for instance, also has similar approximations to PowerPoint, so check these out if you are not working directly with MS Office. Whatever tools you decide suit you best, they do not require specialist knowledge and the guidelines given in this section, will show you how to use the tools to their fullest, if you so choose.
By following the tried and tested methods below, you will in the end, be more familiar with what is involved in cover design and its concept and this will help you greatly, even if you opt for giving your cover over to a professional cover designer in the end, as after reading the following on how you could do it all yourself, you will save loads of money by handing over a much more developed cover concept to finalize and polish.
Even if you don’t (at this stage) need full freedom and independence in your publishing endeavors, there are other options that you might consider given in this section. It’s up to you, but whatever way you go, by reading the rest of this section you will have a range of options to think about and if you choose to follow the guides provided closely, you will have all the tools necessary to completely source (royalty-free) images, design, and produce your own cover for your e-book (and even have an image that can be used for the printable version) so that it can be uploaded to reach a global market. And once you get the hang of it, it gets much easier and you will have the skills to keep producing your own book covers.
